Flowing Passage for Terra Nexus Exhibition

This new work is a large-scale textile installation by Yessiow, measuring 250 meters in length and displayed across a 5m x 6.8m wall. Created through knitting and textile techniques.

The piece is inspired by paku pipid, the traditional Balinese decoration placed at ceremonial gates as a gesture of welcome. Along the knitted strands, handmade lace frangipani (jepun) flowers appear as key elements. The woven colors draw from poleng (black-and-white, symbolizing balance), alongside earthy tones that reflect the natural landscape.

This year, Yessiow has worked closely with her parents who have a lifelong practice in knitting to create several pieces. This installation is their most ambitious collaboration so far, both in scale and process. Although Yessiow grew up surrounded by yarns and fabrics, she only began to embrace textiles in her own practice recently. Working alongside her parents has allowed her to weave their world with hers, bridging family history with contemporary art.

For Yessiow, this work is more than its size and materials. It carries their shared story. Beginning in the knitting factory where she grew up and now expanding into the art space. It is both personal and collective, a reminder of how collaboration can open new directions in art.
