"Mapeed" For Tehbotol Sosro

Tehbotol Sosro Design Competition
In 2023, Yessiow had the chance to serve as a jury member for the renowned illustration competition by Tehbotol Sosro, a heritage tea bottle brand from Indonesia known for its annual design competition where 15–20 illustrations are selected to be printed as their labels. The theme for the 2023 competition was "Bangga Berbudaya Asli Indonesia" (Proud of Original Indonesian Culture).
Yessiow also created two designs for this project: one for the competition poster and another for the label. She felt incredibly fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to judge and lead the competition. It was a challenging task to choose the 14 best illustrations from over 1,000 submissions, as the quality and creativity of the works were outstanding.
"Mapeed Tradition"
Yessiow’s artwork is a visual homage to the richness and diversity of Balinese culture, inspired by the Mapeed ritual. Growing up in Bali, she witnessed firsthand the beauty and vibrancy of this ancient tradition, which remains an integral part of Balinese life today.
At its core, Mapeed is a ritual of thanksgiving, where women come together to offer their blessings and gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, the Almighty God. It is a communal celebration, with women forming a procession to deliver offerings while accompanied by their families in full traditional Balinese attire—a dazzling display of color, texture, and devotion.
In her artwork, Yessiow sought to capture the essence of this ritual, incorporating traditional Balinese motifs such as temple carvings, ornate textiles, and the island’s lush green landscapes. The result is a vibrant and dynamic composition that celebrates the enduring beauty of Balinese culture.
Through this piece, Yessiow hopes to inspire greater appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural heritage and a renewed sense of pride in the unique traditions that define Bali. It stands as a tribute to the grace of women, the power of community, and the artistic and spiritual richness of this extraordinary island.
